Schools of Tomorrow : Assenede

De Bouwerij Architects is in collaboration with AUPA, laureate for designing three passive schools, including this school for young adults in Assenede.

On the side of the street, two separate volumes are held together by an outer wall, which continues as a brick plinth of two buildings.
The school site, which is basically a cluster, has an intermediate space as central access.
The part above this ‘brick plinth’ can be seen as a ‘roof volume’ by equipping the facades with façade roof tiles.
On the side of the landscape, the cluster opens up and we experience the two buildings as a more separate given. This provides the school site with a multiple identity.

A large concrete canopy connects these two separate volumes, which creates a dry passage underneath. The area on top of this canopy is used as a footbridge, which makes it possible to go from one volume to the other on the first floor. When this footbridge is used, it is almost like the people are walking on the brick plinth of the building.

One volume contains the gymnasium, the refectory, an area for crafts and other related functions. The other volume contains the supporting administrative functions, the staff room, …etc. on the ground floor. Here above, all classrooms are located on the first and second floor. These rooms cantilever compared to the ground floor, which creates a covered space below.
There are two covered entrances to the classrooms, which gives choice and variation of usage.

By the concept of two separate volumes, where the gymnasium and the refectory are housed in one separate identifiable volume, it is easy to organise the use by third parties because of its sealability and accessibility.
For the two volumes, a distinction was made between more acoustically hard (sports, refectory, music) and soft functions (classrooms, administration, staff room). By placing them in separate volumes, possible acoustic interference between the functions can be avoided.
